The Original Cowboys were vaqueros. In addition to this little known history, 1 in 4 cowboys were black, and many others were native, as well as queer, trans, and non-binary. The missing puzzle pieces of our shared past transcend borders, time and space. They are in every uncovered photograph we still are lucky enough to come across, every oral history handed down despite hundreds of years of forced assimilation and genocide. Now more than ever, it is our responsibility to uplift these hidden histories as well as sift and discern them clearly from the mythologies we have inherited within the colonial project that has always been “the West.”
