Our ancestors as superheroes: PACHUCAS MUTANTES is a semi-fictitious memory comic spanning multiple dimensions and focusing intimately on the relationship between generations on either side of the atomic bomb. In addition to highlighting an underrepresented group by centering the midcentury pachucas and their contributions to both American and Chicanx culture and history, the goal of the series is to explore the concepts of time and personal memory through two interweaving vantage points: the reality of the reader, communally staring down our ever-imminent, dystopian present / future ——— and the unique and powerful pachucas, Mexican-American women of the youth movement in the 1940s & 50s; what were they thinking, feeling, dreaming? How do they continue to inspire and change the world, and what can they teach us right now, while we need them most?
